Veteran In-Home Care & Support in San Antonio, TX
Helping San Antonio wartime veterans, service-connected veterans, and surviving spouses navigate homecare resources, monthly financial allowances, and dignified in-home personal care.
Maximizing Your Hard-Earned VA Home Care Benefits
Veterans who have service-connected disabilities or are enrolled in VA Health Care can access several homecare programs, tax-free financial top-ups, and caregiver support programs.
These benefits generally fall into two categories: Direct VA Clinical & In-Home Health Services (managed by the Veterans Health Administration) and Financial Compensation Top-Ups (managed by the Veterans Benefits Administration).
At Affinity Senior Care of Texas, we work with veteran families throughout San Antonio, Alamo Heights, Stone Oak, Helotes, and surrounding Bexar County communities to structure custom in-home care plans. VA cash benefits such as Aid & Attendance and Special Monthly Compensation are paid to you and can be used to pay for our private-pay care.
1. Financial Top-Ups to Monthly Disability & Pension
If your service-connected disability or health condition impacts your ability to perform daily routines, you can file claims to increase your monthly cash payout to help pay for homecare services:
A. Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)
- What it is: An additional, tax-free monetary benefit paid above standard VA disability compensation rates for veterans with specific severe service-connected disabilities.
- Key Homecare Tiers (SMC-L through SMC-R): If your service-connected condition requires another person to assist you regularly with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)—such as bathing, dressing, feeding, or managing prosthetics—or if you need continuous higher-level home care, you may be eligible for higher SMC rates (specifically SMC-L for aid and attendance or SMC-R for skilled in-home care).
- How to file: Submit VA Form 21-2680 (Examination for Housebound Status or Permanent Need for Regular Aid and Attendance) completed by your treating physician.
B. Aid & Attendance (A&A) or Housebound Allowance
- What it is: Additional tax-free monthly funds paid to veterans who receive a VA Pension (or severe disability allowances) and need regular personal care assistance or are substantially confined to their home due to a permanent disability.
- Usage: Payouts can be used to pay for private caregivers, family members, or agency care.
- How to file: File VA Form 21-2680 via your regional VA office or MyVA account.
- Surviving spouses: Unremarried surviving spouses of wartime veterans may also qualify for the VA Survivors Pension with Aid & Attendance (VA Form 21P-534EZ).
2. In-Home Care & Personal Support Programs
(Arranged directly through your VA Social Worker or Primary Care Team)
A. Homemaker and Home Health Aide (H/HHA) Program
- What it is: The VA contracts with licensed home health agencies in the Community Care Network (CCN) to send trained aides to your house.
- Services provided: Personal care (bathing, dressing, grooming, mobility assistance), meal preparation, and light housekeeping.
- Cost: Free or low copay depending on your service-connected disability rating (veterans rated 50% or higher generally pay $0 copay).
- How to file/claim: Request an assessment directly from your VA Primary Care Provider or VA Social Worker.
B. Veteran-Directed Care (VDC)
- What it is: A flexible program that gives the veteran a monthly budget for homecare instead of using agency aides.
- Key Feature: You hire, schedule, and manage your own personal care workers—which in many states can include family members or friends.
- How to file/claim: Request referral to Veteran-Directed Care through your VA social worker (availability varies by VA Medical Center region).
C. Home-Based Primary Care (HBPC)
- What it is: Comprehensive medical care delivered directly in your residence. A team consisting of a physician/NP, nurse, physical therapist, and social worker provides primary health services for veterans with complex, chronic conditions who have difficulty traveling to clinic appointments.
D. Respite Care Services
- What it is: Temporary in-home aide coverage, adult day health center care, or short-term facility care designed to give family caregivers a temporary break.
- Allowance: Up to 30 days per calendar year.
3. Caregiver Support Programs
Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC)
- What it is: A direct benefit program for primary family caregivers of eligible veterans.
- Key Benefits for Caregiver:
- Monthly tax-free stipend paid directly to the designated family caregiver.
- Health insurance coverage (CHAMPVA) if eligible.
- Respite care, mental health counseling, and caregiver training.
- Eligibility: Available to veterans with a service-connected disability rating of 70% or higher (individual or combined) who need at least 6 continuous months of in-person care for daily living activities or supervision.
- How to file: Submit VA Form 10-10CG (Application for the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers) with your designated caregiver.
